The newest addition to the Secondary Ed family at UW-Madison is well under way. This amazing group of aspiring teachers came together for the first time this past week.
On Monday we gathered at the Red Gym for an orientation, meeting each other and introducing the wide array of staff that will support their journey into the classroom. After lunch and a rainy resource walk, the first university course met- Language Awareness with Prof Prasad and Lisa Velarde.
Through the middle of the week, site based field teams began work at a variety of local community settings. Additionally, in their second course- Social & Cultural Approaches to Ed Policy with Prof Lee, they began tackling the multi-faceted question—why school? Some students were also able to join Aaron Bird Bear on cultural and historic tour of the UW campus, exploring life throughout the past 12,000 years on this land.
The week wrapped up with luncheon at Olbrich Gardens. Community partners, current students from both cohorts, field staff, and upcoming instructors had time to connect, reflect on the first week, and look forward to the upcoming year. Off to a strong start.
